History
The Finnish Model 27 also known as the M27 was Finland’s Army’s first complete rework of the Russian Mosin Model 1891. The rifle was shortened from the original M91 design and would be Finland’s second model of production involving the Mosin pattern of rifles. The Finns nicknamed the rifle Pystykorva (Spitz) due to the front sight getting protective ears on it resembling the upright ears of a spitz dog. This rifle uses the same receiver and magazine that the 1891 uses. Some models even were made on pre 1900 Hex receivers. The bolt and receiver were modified with a rail system to help fit the bolt better and improve reliability. Ultimately this change would not be needed and was considered redundant. The first batch of stocks used 1891 stocks and cut them down to fit the new action and heavier Finnish barrel. The modified stock would break especially during training which slowed the production down until the problems could get worked out for a new and different design. The rifles were produced from mid 1927 until the end of 1940 and would be the Finnish Army’s battle rifle during the Winter War. These are not to be confused with the Finnish Guard model 28/30 rifles.
Condition
For sale is a very rare and interesting Finish Mosin Nagant model M27. This M27 is in great shape and we would consider in excellent condition. The stock is a two-piece design similar to that of Japanese Arisaka rifles where the top part of the stock would be fabricated and then paired and sealed with the lower section of the buttstock. So when looking at that understand there is not a crack but two pieces of wood grafted together. You may notice the line and different wood grain as well as some wood dowels to seal the unit together. This serves as a fine piece of craftsmanship from the old world. The stock itself has a fantastic finish and a beautiful wood grain. It is difficult to tell if it is a refinish or not because it does look proper, and there is some minor existing wear present. Another thing to note is the rifle is not [SA] marked meaning it did not serve in the Finish military. This would explain why the rifle itself is in such great condition. The receiver is dated 1934 when the rifle was produced so this rifle could have sat in reserve inventory through the War or even been sold out of Finland before the war. Either way this would technically mean the rifle is unissued. The rifle was imported to the U.S. by Century Arms and has a small import mark on the barrel by the cleaning rod. The barrel is in fantastic shape and has a good bore with nice sharp rifling. There is some wear present but overall this barrel looks great. The bolt is also in good shape and just has some dried oils on it. The action feels nice. The barrel is marked T indicating it was made by Tikka. The receiver is a Hex receiver indicating it was a Russian Mosin that has been reworked into a Finish rifle.
