History

The Mauser Model 1902 was a bolt-action Mauser pattern rifle designed for Mexico. This rifle was very similar to Mauser’s M. 1895 but used the new and updated Gewehr 98 action. This rifle was also seen as a significant upgrade to Mexico’s previous service rifle. Upgrades included three locking lugs and a gas shield on the bolt. The rifle was able to accept older 1895 pattern bayonets. Steyr Austria, Loewe Berlin and DWM produced the rifles in 1902 and 1906 for the Mexican Army. 38,000 units were made by DWM and 40,000 units were produced in Austria by Steyr. In 1910 the Mexican Mauser Model 1910 or Modelo 1910 was made. This was a locally made Model 1902 made in Mexico. Mexico wanted to reduce dependency on foreign suppliers and Fabrica Nacional de Caruchos and Fabrica Nacional de Armas were created with some help from Europe. The Mexicans also produced a 1910 variant closer to the original Mauser 1895 carbine as well. 8,000 bayonets from SIG’s Mondragon rifle were custom fit to the new 1910. This pattern of Mauser saw combat in the Mexican Revolution and the Spanish Civil War. 20,000 units were sent to aid the Spanish Republicans. It is believed that 40,000-60,000 of these rifles were produced.

Condition

This Mexican Mauser M.1910 is in good condition.

We noted that not all serial numbers are matching and it is missing a cleaning rod.
The year of production is unkown as it cannot be read on the receiver. This rifle has a Mexican crest along with Fabrica Nacional de Armas production marking. The bluing is fairly worn and the finish has a nice patina to it. We noted even wear on the finish and the rifle still retains some of its original finish.

The bore had rifling but it was pretty dark and there was current pitting. We cleaned this unit to help out the barrel and clean out some of that rust. The bolt and bolt face look very good.

The stock is in good shape and retains most of its original finish however it has dried and formed some cracks. We noted some dehydration cracks forming on the top of the cheek well by the butt plate, one near the lower trigger guard, and another by the lower sling mount. We also noted one near the bayonet lug. We have oiled the stock to give it some hydration and keep the wood intact the cracks do not look awful or like splits but more like formation from dryness.
