History
The Remington Rolling Block is a family of breech-loading rifles that was introduced in the mid-1800’s by E. Remington & Sons who later went on to become Remington Arms. Remington made these rifles in a variety of calibers and produced them for the U.S. as well as militaries all over the world. Some of the following calibers are included. .43 Spanish, 12.17×44 Norweigan & Swede and even 8x50mmR Lebel and 7mm Mauser. Other calibers were made too and Remington exported many different examples early on.
In 1872, the New York State militia ordered Remington Rolling Block rifles for their inventory. These would be different than some other examples produced by Remington with knurled hammer and block for more grip. After chambering a round, the hammer falls to a 3/4 cock safety and needs to be recocked to fire.
Condition
The antique Remington pictured is in good/fair condition. This Remington is missing its rod and front barrel band. All of the other parts are intact and present on the antique rifle. The bore is in fantastic condition given the age. We noted good solid rifling with a relatively clean bore. There is some carbon fouling but that should clean easily. The finish of the rifle is fair at best. Most of the original finish is gone and there is some light surface rust. However, we did note a very nice patina on the rifle which gives it a nice proper aged look. The wooden parts are in good shape with standard wear from use, age, and transportation (see photos). Most of the stock and fore-end finish is intact with some scuffs and dings here and there. The action still feels nice and strong.
