Surplus green wooden rifle crate. Hinges and latches are good but latches very weakly. Both handles present. Wood is dinged, scratched, and chipped but does not have any major cracking. Many screws are loose in various places. Shows the obvious signs of wear from use but still a solid box.
In researching this piece we were unable to confirm the country of origin. It originally came in from Europe and looks similar in construction to other rifle and ammo crates from Yugoslavia, Poland, and Czechoslovakia. There are some indications this could have been for the Yugoslavian M24 rifle but given its dimensions it would have had to been the shortest barreled model. This crate will fit the AK-47 comfortably so it could have been intended for that as well.
Our best guess is this crate was intended for rifles and used by a Soviet country, most likely Yugoslavia, Poland or Czechoslovakia, and made anywhere from the 50s to 80s.
