This French Fusil Gras Model 1874 M80 is in fair condition. The rifle is chambered in 11mm (11×59mmR Gras aka 11mm Vickers) and was manufactured in 1877 by Manufacture d’armes de Saint-Étienne. It was modified in 1880 and designated M80. This rifle has a 27 inch barrel, turned down bolt handle, and no bayonet lug indicating this is the Cavalry model. This rifle being made prior to 1898 is classified as “Antique”.
The stock is fair having numerous dings, gouges, and scratches but there is no evident cracking or splitting. There is some chipping and wood loss along both sides of the cleaning rod. The wood of the forend has a rougher texture than the rest of stock.
The overall finish on the metal ranges 40-60% and shows patina, scratching, pitting, and staining. Most finish loss is seen toward the muzzle. The barrel bands, trigger guard, and butt plate are all brass showing staining, tarnish, and wear. The sling loops show staining and pitting.
The receiver is good with moderate finish loss and the action functions very well for a rifle of this vintage. The bolt is good with a fairly clean bolt face however the charging handle does show patina, rust staining, and pitting.
The barrel shows finish loss, scratching, abrasions, staining, and some pitting. The bore is fair, 2.5/5, showing wear and pitting but the rifling is good. This rifle is MISSING THE REAR SIGHT but all other hardware (screws, sling mounts, etc) are present. Numbers appear to be all matching throughout. This would make a great candidate for restoration or to enjoy as a shooter.
