This Lee-Enfield No 4 Mk 1 appears to have begun life in 1942 and was later converted into a “Jungle Carbine” configuration. This is NOT a true No 5 Mk 1 Jungle. Large numbers of Enfield SMLE MkIII* and No 4 rifles were imported into the U.S. in the 1950s and 60s by Golden State Arms and converted under the brand “Santa Fe”. There are no markings on the barrel to indicate it was one of those. There were numerous other companies and manufacturers who also did conversions but we can find no markings to indicate the source of the conversion.
As is this No 4 Mk 1 conversion jungle carbine chambered in .303 British is in excellent condition. The stock and hand guard have no cracks or splits and the finish shows almost no wear. Given the color and smoothness it is very possible this is a newer stock from when it was converted.
The finish on the metal is very good and obviously a refinish. Given the relative thickness and how it obscures many of the markings this may have had multiple refinishes. Wear is minimal but there are a few small scratches on the barrel and on the right side stock socket. There is some minor surface rust on the front sight as well as finish loss. The magazine appears to be an Ishapore pattern and shows the most wear with finish loss and scratches.
The bolt is very good with a clean bolt face. Minor wear present in the receiver. The bore is excellent with very crisp rifling, shiny, no signs of rust or pitting and just a few specs of fouling that should clean out easily.
Mechanically all parts function as they should. This rifle has not been test fired by us.
Though this is not an actual Enfield No 5 Mk 1 Jungle it does present as an excellent replica and would make for a fantastic shooter.
