This Lee-Enfield No 4 Mk 2 in .303 British caliber was made in 1952 at Fazakerley (ROF). At some point later it was decommissioned, rendered inoperable, and used as a training rifle designated as “Drill Purpose”. The Drill Purpose rifles were used for training in rifle operation/handling, general drill practice, parade or ceremonial functions. They were not intended to be fired.

This No 4 Mk 1 Drill Purpose is in very good condition. The wood shows some minor dings and scratches common to surplus. There is a hair line crack on the right side butt stock running from butt to almost the wrist. Finish shows minor wear.
The finish on the metal shows moderate wear with some scratches and patches of more severe finish loss. This may have been arsenal refinished before or when it was converted to drill purpose. Most severe finish loss is on the magazine.
The action functions mechanically as it should however the bolt does not lock down completely and is very tight. The bolt shows signs of modification and head space appears off. The trigger and safety function normally. Given the numerous and varied modifications done to Enfields that were deactivated it is difficult to know what else may have been modified in the action. As it is it could chamber and eject dummy rounds. DO NOT USE LIVE AMMUNITION IN THIS RIFLE.
This Enfield No 4 Mk 1 Drill Purpose rifle would serve best as a display piece.

While this rifle could be used for replacement parts extreme caution should be taken as parts may have been modified from original spec. Any attempt to correct this rifle back to firing configuration is done at the owner’s own risk. A consultation with a reputable gunsmith is highly recommended before any modifications are attempted and before any attempt is made to fire. Failure to observe these warnings could result in catastrophic failure of the firearm as well as injury or death.
