History

The Gewehr 98 also knowns as the G98 or most famously the Gew98 is one of the most sought after bolt action rifles made by Mauser for the German empire from 1898 until 1935. The Gewehr 98 is the first of the Mauser 98 series and made the famous “98-Action” that is still used by some rifles today. This rifle fed from an internal 5 round magazine and used stripper clips to feed 7.92x57mm Mauser (8mm Mauser).

As stated this Mauser was one of the most revolutionary rifles ever developed. The rifle was designed by Paul Mauser and would go on to inspire rifle designs by other countries around the world. Mauser patented the design in September of 1895 and was selling a simple Mauser 1895 to many nations around the world along with the model 1888 and 1871. Around this time the reputation for Mauser rifles and German made small arms was at an all time high.

The Mauser saw its first live combat in the Boxer Rebellion of 1898. Around this time Waffenfabrik Mauser produced 290,000 rifles, Deutsche Waffen und Munitionsfabriken (DWM) produced 210,000 rifles. 7,000,000 Mauser 98 style rifles were made for the First World War.

The Mauser 1898 was one of the first rifles to implement the new 8mm Mauser cartridge, that was introduced in 1888 to modify Gewehr 88 Rifles. When the 98 was introduced the S patrone (S ball cartridge) was used with spitzer bullets. Conversions were marked with a Small S on the chamber and the barrel at the back of the rear sight base.  Rifles needed to be marked because the new cartridge had a different trajectory.

The rifle design would later go on to be shortened for the Kar98K which was one of the most famous carbines around the world.

Condition

The Mauser 98 rifle pictured is the Mauser for sale. This rifle is in the 7,7XX serial range which indicates it is among the first rifles produced for German contract. This First World War-period military rifle was manufactured at the Imperial German Danzig Arsenal. SN 2102. The barrel is S marked and the roller coaster style sight does not go all the way back to the rear, so this rifle was modified for spitzer rounds. The rifle was produced by Danzig in 1900. It is full of German acceptance markings and proof marks. The rifle is in good condition it is certainly worn and used. The stock is in good condition especially for its age. The bluing condition is pretty worn throughout the rifle. The rifling is in good condition but the bore is pretty pitted and dark. The serial numbers do not appear to be matching. This will include an Amberg marked bayonet. We noted the rear of the hilt where the retaining button is is dented making the button not very usable. Please view all photos.
