This Spanish Model 1944 Air Force Mauser Short Rifle is in very good condition. The rifle is chambered in 7.92×57 (8MM Mauser) and was manufactured between 1944-1957. This is the Air Force version of the Spanish M43 short rifle which itself was Spain’s version of the famous German K98.
The Air Force model is distinguished from the standard M43 by the recessed rear sling mount in stock and most importantly the front and rear sights. Air Force models were generally conversions of surplus Spanish Civil War Mausers such as Gew98s, Polish Vz29s, Czech Vz24s, and others that were then assembled from refurbished parts by Fabrica de Armas La Coruna. This rifle’s rear sight does have the mark of S/42G indicating a Mauser sight of the mid 1930s. Of particular note on this rifle is that the charging handle does not have the serial number and proof mark usually found on these rifles.
The stock in in very good condition with no cracks but it does exhibit some minor dings and scratches common of surplus of this age. The finish of the stock and hand guard is very good with only minor blackening near the butt plate and near the muzzle as well as the top of the hand guard.
The finish on the barrel, receiver, rear sight, and most other metal parts is good at about 70% intact. Most finish loss is seen on rear sight, bayonet lug, and butt plate. The butt plate is slightly loose. There is patina on both barrel bands and magazine plate. The inside of the receiver is very clean and bolt face is remarkably clean for its age. The bolt and charging handle have finish loss but the actions is smooth.
The bore is fair, 2/5, with rifling showing much wear and some signs of pitting present. This rifle includes the cleaning rod which has a minor bend and does exhibit rust staining. While difficult to remove the cleaning rod will come out. All other hardware (screws, sling mounts, etc) are present. Numbers appear to be all matching (receiver and magazine plate) but note that the bolt and charging handle are not serialized.
