History
Basilio Campo-Giro patented his first automatic pistol in 1904, followed by a self-loading carbine in 1911 and several pistol improvements between 1912 and 1915. His 9mm pistol was adopted by the Spanish army in 1912 as the Modelo 1912, later improved and re-adopted as the Modelo 1913 and then the Modelo 1913-16 due to further refinements. The Campo-Giro pistol, a delayed blowback design with a unique shock absorber system, longer barrel, and grip-located magazine, was powerful and accurate but complex to disassemble. Despite later being declared obsolete, it saw action in the Spanish Civil War and directly influenced the development of the Astra Modelo de 1921/Model 400. Campo-Giro died in 1916 before witnessing the full impact of his designs.
