The Sudanese M1958 bayonet was the first bayonet made for the Eugene Stoner designed ArmaLite AR-10. In 1958 Sudan contracted with Interarmco who coordinated with Artillerie Inrichtingen (Dutch Contract) for procurement of 2,508 AR-10 rifles. Sudan had one stipulation, that they must have a bayonet. As the original AR-10 design did not have a bayonet mount a sleeve with adapter was developed that could be pinned forward of the gas block to allow for a bayonet.
The bayonet itself was patterned off the German SG-42 with a different blade profile but including a tool kit in the grip. These were made by Waffenfabrik Carl Eickhorn of Solingen Germany. Eickhorn has never denied making the bayonet but has not been able to confirm as their records from that time were lost.
Sudan would not be the only country to order the AR-10 with the bayonet mount capability. A small number were also used by Guatemala, Burma, Indonesia and for the Dutch Army Trials. Total production is estimated to have been between 3,500 to 4,500.
This M1958 Sudanese Bayonet with Scabbard is complete with tool kit and is in excellent condition. The color is chocolate brown on scabbard and grip. There are no chips or cracks on the grip slabs. Only the most minor of wear and a few very small scratches observable on the grip.
The leather sleeve at the top of grip is present and shows no drying or cracking.
The blackened blade show only scabbard wear on both sides. Edges are sharp with no dings, chips, or rolls. The point is crisp and shows no rounding.
The tool kit inside the grip is complete with cork screw, bottle opener, and rifle/sight adjustment tools. There is no rust visible on any of the tools or metal components.
The scabbard has the metal belt hook and is in excellent condition. The finish of the metal hook and throat shows only the most minor of wear. The scabbard has minor wear with one small scratched spot discolored and some minor discoloration/finish wear at tip. A few small scratches may be seen in a certain angle/light.
Overall this complete M1958 Sudanese Bayonet and Scabbard is in excellent to near mint condition. Only a few very minor flaws present. Given the small number produced and the conditions in the areas they were issued; they are now considered extremely rare.
