This Swiss Schmidt Rubin Model 1889/92 Bicyclist’s Bayonet is in very good condition. The 1889/92 bayonets were a conversion of prior model 1863 and 1871 bayonets. The socket was removed, a cross piece added, and a pommel brazed to the blade stub. These bayonets were issued to the Schmidt-Rubin M1889, M1896/11, M1897 Kadet Rifle, M1900 Short Rifle, and M1911 carbine (K11). They were issued to bicyclist troops and machine gunners as well as other supporting personnel.
This Bayonet is in very good condition. Much of the finish is lost and the metal has a deep patina. The point is only slightly dulled and the four blade edges do not show any dings or divots. There is very minor rust staining in the barrel ring. The cross piece also shows rust staining as does the grip and pommel.
This Bayonet comes with a scabbard which is in good condition. The scabbard is brown leather showing wear and some scratches. The stitching is good and the strap for securing a frog is in place. Of note is the metal finial doesn’t show a Swiss cross which are normally found on these scabbards.
The Bayonet is 15 ¼ inch long and overall length is just under 20 inches. The muzzle ring is 15mm and will not work on the smaller 14mm K11. Given the serial number it appears this was originally issued to a Model 1889 rifle around 1892.
