This Swiss Model 1871 Socket Bayonet is in very good condition. The 1871 is extremely similar to the Model 1863 visually and both were used interchangeably between a number of Swiss Rifles in the 1860s-70s. According to “World of Bayonets / Swiss Bayonets” the distinguishing feature is the weight. The 1863s weighed approximately 350 grams and the 1871s approximately 300 grams. This bayonet weighs in at 317 grams so given that it is on the lighter side of the spectrum it is an 1871.
The Model 1871 was compatible with the following rifles:
M1871 Vetterli Infantry Swiss 10.4 mm
M1871 Stutzer (sharpshooter)
M1863/67 Milbank-Amsler conversion
M1867 Peabody
M1869 Vetterli
M1869/71 Vetterli
This bayonet is in very good condition. The point is slightly dull. The four edges don’t show any dings but have minor wear. All metal shows deep patina and rust staining. Most rust staining is seen at the socket. There is no obvious sign of pitting.
This bayonet measures 19 inches long, 21 7/8 inch overall length. Weight is 317 grams. Given the serial number and the marking of Swiss Cross over S this bayonet would most likely been issued to Model 1869/71 Vetterli rifles between 1871-1874.
