History
Schmidt Rubin 1889
The Schmidt-Rubin model 1889 was officially adopted by the Swiss Military in 1889. It utilized the iconic Swiss straight-pull action, a symbol of Swiss innovation and engineering perfection. The action was invented by Colonel Eduard Rubin and utilized the signature 7.5 round invented by Colonel Rudolph Schmidt. The straight pull action allowed for smoother and faster cycling of ammunition because the action itself does the step of lifting the handle for the user. Full-time production of this rifle began in 1891. The rifle features a 31” barrel. It utilizes a twelve-round magazine firing 7.5×53.5 Swiss (Also known as 7.5x54mm Swiss or GP90). The GP90 cartridge was revolutionary during its era because it utilized a .30-caliber bullet when many other nations were still using .45-caliber bullets. The round is paper-patched which aids in the lubrication of the bullet however, this round was updated to not need paper patching when GP90/23 replaced it. This rifle was the start of many great Swiss military innovations and the famous K31 would not have been possible had it not been for this rifle’s advancements.
