This U.S. Springfield Model 1873 Trapdoor Rifle in .45-70 caliber was made in 1889. This puts it in the very late period of Model 1873 production. This is the standard issue U.S. military model with a barrel length of 32.6 inches and an overall length of 52 inches.

This rifle is in very good condition. The wood shows some minor dings and scratches but no signs of splitting, cracking or chipping. The finish is very good with moderate wear though there is blackening on the left side between the barrel bands and on the left butt stock.

The finish on the metal parts is about 75% but there is much finish loss at muzzle. The barrel is good with minor wear and minor scratches. The block, chamber, and hammer are all very good with minor wear and no signs of rust or pitting. The bore is good with moderate wear but clear rifling. There is pitting present but no active rust.

All parts appear present. Mechanically the block, trigger, and hammer function as they should. This has not been test fired by us.

This rifle includes the cleaning rod which has rust staining.

Overall this is an excellent example of the first standard issue breech loading rifle of the U.S. Army, the Model 1873.
