History

Swedish Mauser Model 1896 Long Rifle: The M96 is a famous and sought-after Mauser rifle among the family of Swedish Mausers. These rifles were derived from the early Mauser 1893 but utilized the 6.5×55 Swedish cartridge. The production for Swedish Mausers began in 1898 at Carl Gustafs stads Gevärsfaktori in Eskillstuna, Sweden. The Model 1896 rifle was adopted in 1896 for infantry use to replace Remington’s model 1867-1889 rolling block in 8x58mmR Danish Krag. The Swedish production under license from Mauser began in 1898 and additional rifles were manufactured by Mauser in 1899 and 1900 tue to a delay they had in shipping especially for machinery. The production for the M96 ran until 1925 and additionally 18,000 M96 rifles were made by Husqvarna Vapenfabriks AB during WWII for civilian marksmanship training.  Mauser on the other hand produced 40,000 for Sweden during the turn of the century and Carl Gustafs produced 475,000 total. In 1941 the Swedes adopted 6.5x55mm m/94 ball ammunition which uses a boat tail spitzer bullet requiring the sights to be changed from a U shape notch to a rectangular sight post to better fit the trajectory of the new round.

Condition

Excellent condition: The rifle pictured is the exact rifle for sale. This m/96 long rifle in great shape for a rifle well over 100 years old. This rifle was produced in 1916 by Carl Gustafs in Sweden.

The receiver, magazine plate, bolt take down lever, butt plate, and barrel bands are matching numbers. The bolt knob has a different number but the rear body has what looks like electro-pencil and pen of the last 3 digits matching. So likely the gun was re-arsenaled and re-headspaced and force matched with a new bolt. The stock is also cut to have a curved bolt knob and this bolt knob is straight, so maybe that was replaced too but we do not know for sure as this rifle did not come with service records. No other parts had numbers. The stock is in great shape with a majority of it’s finish intact. this stock has wonderful wood grain and looks very unique. The most wear on the stock are on the bottom by the sling swivel of the rear and the lower front handguard. Standard light wear from service and use. The blued finish looks wonderful and is even throughout the rifle. The front sight sleeve (not the sight itself has some dings on it.) No major rust or patina to report. The bolt and bolt face look great and the action feels nice and smooth. We would rate the bore a 4/5 nice sharp rifling throughout the barrel. Clean chamber and crown with only minor carbon fouling from use. This rifle does include the thread protector which is somehow quite rare for Swedish Mausers.
