History

In 1953, Sturm, Ruger & Company introduced the Single-Six, a .22 LR single-action revolver that became very popular. Its success led Ruger to design a centerfire revolver modeled after the Colt Single Action Army. This new revolver became the Ruger Blackhawk. Ruger released the Blackhawk in 1955 chambered in .357 Magnum, and it sold well due to its simple, strong design. In 1956, Ruger introduced a .44 Magnum version shortly after Smith & Wesson launched the cartridge. The Blackhawk became popular because it was cheaper and easier to obtain than the Smith & Wesson Model 29. The Blackhawk became popular because it was cheaper and easier to obtain than the Smith & Wesson Model 29. Blackhawks made from 1955–1962 are called “Flattop” models because their rear sights lacked protective side “ears.” From 1962–1972, Ruger produced the “Three Screw” Blackhawk, named for the three screws visible on the revolver’s side. The Flattop and Three Screw models improved on the Colt Single Action Army with adjustable sights and durable coil springs instead of flat leaf springs. Bill Ruger chose coil springs because they were stronger and fixed a key weakness in the Colt design. Early Blackhawks worked like the Colt revolver, requiring the hammer to be half-cocked for loading and making it unsafe to carry with all six chambers loaded. In 1973, Ruger introduced the New Model Blackhawk with a transfer bar safety that prevented accidental firing. Ruger also offered free upgrades to convert older Blackhawks to the safer system

Condition

For sale is an original Ruger Blackhawk revolver chambered in 357 Magnum. This is a single action only revolver. The overall condition of this Ruger is excellent. We note a majority of the original blued finish is still intact evenly throughout the firearm. There is minor wear on points where you can expect from use and transport. Near the bottom of the grip on the rear side there is a small scuff along with the left side of the frame near the trigger and near the end of the barrel by the muzzle, some parts of the cylinder wear contact is made. The wood grips appear to be in excellent shape with no damage to report. The bore looked excellent and we would consider it nearly perfect for a used firearm. We give the bore a 4.75/5 as the majority of the bore is shiny clean with nice sharp rifling. There is a bit of copper fouling near the end but this should clean very easily. The action and timing feel great with no issues to report. This would be a great firearm for any avid Ruger or revolver collector, an original piece of American manufacturing!
