Description

This Argentine Mauser Model 1909 was made by DWM Deutsche Waffen und Munitionsfabriken and is chambered in 7.65×53 Argentine (aka 7.65 Mauser). According to some sources the serial number would put it at 1910 for year of manufacture. The barrel is approximately 29 ½ inches. Overall length is 49 inches. Though this is the infantry model the proof mark of an anchor on the rear sight may indicate that this was intended for the navy.

This rifle is in very good condition. The numbers are almost all matching. Unfortunately the bolt serial does not match. The finish on the stock and hand guard shows only minor wear and no splitting or cracking. There are a few minor dings and scratches and a deeper gouge on the left side butt stock.

The finish on the barrel, bands, and magazine plate/trigger guard is good at about 90%. Most wear is seen at the muzzle. The butt plate does have rust staining. The receiver is good but there is minor rust staining on the top front on the crest. The inside of the receiver shows minor grime/oil as does the bolt face.

The bore is very good with solid rifling, minor abrasion wear, and only the most minor signs of possible pitting. The action functions mechanically as it should however the safety is stuck and will not actuate. This could be from a missing part or something binding up internally. To get the safety working properly could require complete disassembly of the bolt. This rifle has NOT been test fired by us.

History

The Argentine Mauser Model 1909 is a Gewehr 98-based bolt action rifle that was designed for the Argentine Army. This rifle was originally produced in Germany and later in Argentina. The rifle is very similar to the G98 but features many changes that the Argentina army requested. The “roller coaster” Lange Visier sight was replaced with a standard leaf sight. Argentina also wanted the rifle to use older Mauser 1891 bayonets. Deutsche Waffen und Munitionsfabriken produced 200,000 rifles and Argentina’s Fabcrica Militar de Armas Portaliles in Rosario and Santa Fe produced 85,000. The rifle was replaced by FN Herstal’s FAL. Rifles that were made without crests were sold to Paraguay for the Chaco War. Argentina, Paruaguay and Dominican Republic used these rifles. Peru also received thousands of this pattern between 1910 and 1914 chambered in 7.65 Mauser. These rifles were more similar to the original G98 and had the original Lange Visier Sight but with a larger ring and a shorter breech to accept 1891 stripper clips.
