Description

This Brazilian Mauser Model 1908 chambered in 7x57mm / 7mm Mauser was made by Fabrica De Itajuba in Brazil. Given its overall appearance it was most likely built in the 1930s. This rifle is not numbers matching.

This rifle is in good condition. The finish of the wood shows minor wear with no splits or cracks. There are the usual minor dings and scratches but also some gouges especially at the grip.

The finish of the metal is about 20-25% overall. Patina has taken over much of the metal especially on the barrel bands. There is no visible rust on the barrel or receiver. There are a few minor spots of rust staining. The bore is surprisingly very good with sharp rifling, minimal wear, and only minor fouling..

The receiver shows some staining and finish loss. The bolt shows finish loss and staining but bolt face shows only minor grime. The bolt is not numbers matching to receiver but mechanical function is smooth and operates as it should. This rifle has not been test fired by us.

The rifle is MISSING the rear butt stock swivel and the cleaning rod. All other parts appear present.

History

The Mauser Model 1908 was a series of rifles from the Gewehr 98 pattern rifle. This rifle is very similar to the Gew98 but with a simple tangent leaf sight and a longer upper hand-guard, a carbine variant was also available. The carbine is often confused for the Czech 1908/34 (VZ12/22) but there is a German 1908/34 variant carbine that is made with Brazilian sourced wood for the stock. Deutsche Waffen und Munitionsfabriken (DWM) and Mauser were the original producers of this firearm and would begin exporting rifles to South American nations like Uruguay and most famously Brazil would adopt these riflesBrazilian War Material Industry (IMBEL) would produce upgraded versions of this rifle until they were replaced by the FN FAL. When the Brazilians got rid of their rifles they sent many surplus units to the Dominican Republic. These models are distinct because the Brazilian markings would be replaced with Dominican markings and the desginated model 1953When the US intervened in the Dominican Civil War many of these rifles were preferred over the M16 rifle due to the cartridge having better performance over 5.56×45 NATO at long ranges. Fabrica de Itajuba or IMBEL would continue to produce some M1949 and M954 carbine variants for the Brazilian armed forces. The most recent conflict that used these rifles was the Araguaia Guerilla War in which rebels acquired these rifles in 7.62 NATO from the state police of Para. The model 1949 a short 08/34 variant would be chambered in .30-06 Springfield and the M954 was distinguishable with a threaded muzzle for flash suppressors and grenade launchers. The Model 968 would be chambered in 7.62×51 NATO
