History
The Mauser Model 1908 is a world-famous series of the Mauser Gewehr 98 pattern bolt action rifle. Originally these rifles were manufactured by Deutsche Waffen und Munitionsfabriken (DWM) and Mauser if DWM could not complete the order. These rifles are very similar to the German 1898 rifle and there were both long rifles and carbines. The first exports were delivered to Uruguay and Brazil in South America. These Mausers are very famous for their role and historical significance in South America. After the first few deliveries Brazilian War Material Industry (IMBEL) produced and upgraded variant of the Mauser 1908 until it was replaced by their licensed copy of the FN FAL. The Mauser Mod.1908/34 has a very confusing history. This is because there is also the Mauser 08/34. A good way to tell the two rifles apart are the markings. The 1908/34 is marked fully 1908 while the 08/34 is not. The 08/34 was also chambered in “.30” caliber (30-06) whereas the 1908-34 was chambered in 7x57mm. Brazil had received lots of 30-06 from the US so they had the M.08/34 as a solution to a shortage in 7mm post World War. The 1908 series was very popular in Brazil during their revolution in 1932. It is known as the Constitutionalist Revolution of 1932 (also the Paulista War and even the Brazilian Civil War) which was an uprising in which Brazil’s population in Sao Paulo fought against the 1930 coup d’etat of Getulio Vargas after forcibly assuming control of the nation. The Mauser 1908 earned its name as the Paulista rifle. The Paulista imported many Czech VZ24 export rifles however the Paulista revolutionaries lost the war so many of those VZ24s ended up in the hands of the Brazilian government. This rifle had a major influence on Brazil’s next purchase. BRNO of Czechoslovakia received an order from the Brazilian government for around 100,000 1908/34 Mauser rifles chambered in 7x57mm Mauser.
Condition
The Mauser 1908/34 pictured is the M.1908/34 for sale. This Mauser is in excellent condition. It was manufactured in Czechoslovakia by BRNO and is marked accordingly. It is also marked “MOD.1908/34” The rifle shares much in common with the Czech VZ24 design. The stock of the rifle retains much of its original finish. On the right hand side we noted a small pressure mark/indent in the wood near the grip we noticed some other scratches on the bottom of the stock. The left side of the stock also had some small dings (see photos) Stock retains about 95% of its wood finish. The bluing finish is excellent. We noted some wear on the barrel band, end of the barrel, and the front sight. There is also some slight wear on the bolt release. This rifle appears to be in its original 7mm Mauser (7×57) caliber. This is very rare for a rifle in the USA as many of these rifles that made there way to the US have been converted into 30-06. This rifle is in the original configuration. The barrel had good rifling and the lands and grooves were intact but we noted mild pitting throughout the barrel. The crown looks good and so does the chamber but the bore is pitted. This rifle includes an original Brazilian sling with the “QD” mount feature that was quite unique to the Brazilian Mausers.
