Description

This German Fishtail Matchlock Musket is a REPRODUCTION of the matchlock muskets that became popular in Europe from the mid 16th to the late 17th centuries. This matchlock is a REPRODUCTION and was not made during that time period. This musket was made by Waffenschmiede Im Zeughaus Uberlingen in Germany but the year of manufacture can’t be established. It is numbered 81 but if this was a serial number, series number, or unique identifier is unknown.

This musket was imported from Switzerland and allegedly was used as a prop for films. We have no documentation or provenance to confirm that but it should be noted that this musket may have been built for that purpose. As such this musket may never have been intended to fire.

The musket itself is in good condition. The overall length is 58 inches, the barrel is 43 ½ inches, the caliber is 16mm (.629 cal) based on our caliper. The wood finish of the stock is very good, a deep rich brown, with only very minimal dings or scratches. There are two black streaks running from the rear barrel band on each side. The greatest flaw to be found are two cracks in the stock. There is a small crack on the right side under the pan. On the left side there is a five inch crack from the rear barrel down toward the lever (see photos).

The lever/trigger functions mechanically as it should. The side plate shows minor pitting. The pan shows minor grime/residue. The barrel shows rust staining spots from the muzzle to the down to the pan. The bore is very good to fine and shows dust, very minor pitting, and only the slightest indication that this musket has ever been fired. If it has been shot before it didn’t get shot much.

The musket appears to have all its hardware and includes ramrod and a shooting pole. The rod has some minor rust staining on the metal but is otherwise in good condition. The shooting pole has some minor dings and scratches on the wood and the metal top and bottom have staining.

DISCLAIMER ON FIRING

Though this matchlock is a reproduction it is classified as antique. We can’t determine if it was built to be fired or simply used as a prop for film / re-enactments or intended just for display. While there is some evidence that it may have been fired at some time a consultation with a reputable gunsmith is advised before trying to shoot this. Extreme caution should always be taken with any antique firearm.

This German Fishtail Matchlock would be best utilized as a display piece and would look great over any fireplace or hanging in the study or office.
