Description

The Toradar is a matchlock musket that originated in India in the 1500s based off the design of European matchlocks. They remained popular up until the mid 1800s as they were relatively easy to produce. This Toradar appears similar to other examples dated to the 1700s-1800s period. This is the type with the straight stock with a pentagonal butt stock.

This Toradar matchlock musket is in good condition. The overall length is 56 5/8 inches, the barrel is 36 3/8 inches, the caliber is 15.5mm (.61 caliber) based on our caliper.

The wood finish of the stock is fair showing numerous chips on the butt stock as well as other minor dings and scratches. Some chips are visible on the fore end as well as minor cracking in spots. Some cracks appear to have been glue filled but by appearance it looks like that was done long ago. Most shrinkage and dryness in the wood is seen along the ram rod groove. Worth noting are two discolored areas near the side plates which most likely were from leather bands that helped secure the barrel to the stock and probably rotted away with age. That or possibly metal barrel bands that were lost at some point.

The barrel is rust stained and spotted however the finish stippling pattern shows through very nicely. The front sight appears to have been broken off and is missing The smooth bore is poor with rust, pitting, fouling, and a long life of lead and powder build up. The copper barrel bands are tarnished. The side plates have rust staining and spotting as does the bottom plate and trigger/lever. The side plates are slightly bowing out on each side as the barrel band/binding that would have held them in place is missing.

The trigger/lever has a slight bend. The trigger/lever mechanism does function as it should. The pan is missing the pan cover and pin. The ram rod shows rust staining/spotting and will slide out only about a quarter of its length. The wood may have expanded around it so it has not been forced out.

DISCLAIMER ON FIRING

This Toradar shows much wear, pitting, leading build up, and fouling in the bore and it would be best NOT to be fired. A consultation with a reputable gunsmith is advised if one intends to shoot this. Extreme caution should always be taken with any antique firearm in regards to shooting.

This Toradar would make an excellent display piece or as a wonderful example for any antique or early firearm collection.
