History
The Argentine Mauser Model 1909 is a Gewehr 98-based bolt action rifle that was designed for the Argentine Army. This rifle was originally produced in Germany and later in Argentina. The rifle is very similar to the G98 but features many changes that the Argentina army requested. The “roller coaster” Lange Visier sight was replaced with a standard leaf sight. Argentina also wanted the rifle to use older Mauser 1891 bayonets. Deutsche Waffen und Munitionsfabriken produced 200,000 rifles and Argentina’s Fabcrica Militar de Armas Portaliles in Rosario and Santa Fe produced 85,000. The rifle was replaced by FN Herstal’s FAL. Rifles that were made without crests were sold to Paraguay for the Chaco War. Argentina, Paruaguay and Dominican Republic used these rifles. Peru also received thousands of this pattern between 1910 and 1914 chambered in 7.65 Mauser. These rifles were more similar to the original G98 and had the original Lange Visier Sight but with a larger ring and a shorter breech to accept 1891 stripper clips.
Condition
Excellent condition. The Mauser 1909 pictured is the rifle for sale. This 1909 is in great shape for it’s age. We note a majority of the blue finish is intact and the polished receiver looks fantastic. This 1909 includes a very rare muzzle cap that is serialized and matches the gun. We have not seen one for this pattern of rifle. The muzzle cap design itself is quite neat it pushes in ward and slip fits around the muzzle and front sight it is made with brass and steel and is nicer than even the Swiss muzzle caps we famously love. The stock is in good shape. There is standard service wear like dings and bumps from use and transport. On the right hand side on the bottom of the stock n ear the rear sight there is a deep pressure mark that is about an inch long by a few centimeters wide and is about as deep as a finger tip. It looks like the stock was repaired finish wise. This is probably the ‘worst’ aspect of this rifle as everything else is nearly pristine for its age. The bolt, bolt face and action both look very good and still feel strong. The bore also looked great. We noted a clean bore with nice sharp rifling throughout the barrel. Great chamber and crown too. This rifle will include an original service sling. This is probably the best Argentine 1909 Mauser we have ever had come through our doors.
