The PPS was a submachine gun originally developed by Soviet Russia for the Red Army and later the Warsaw Pact. The PPS family of SMGs was developed first in 1942 as a low cost easy to manufacture option that could be fielded to recon units, tank crews, and support troops. The PPS obviously resembles the famous PPSh-41, known for its very fast fire rate. The PPS was the response to create something more lightweight, compact utilizing the same cartridge. The PPS would also reduce the fire rate and be produced at a lower material cost with less man hours and skilled labor to produce for economic reasons. Sudayev is the designer of the PPS. The first version was the PPS-42 (Pistolet Pulemyot Sudayeva model 1942). It was put into small scale production during the Siege of Leningrad where mass production would not begin until early 1943 at the Sestroretsk Arsenal. 45,000 PPS42s were produced before being replaced by the improved PPS-43. In WW2 most of these PPS43s saw service in the Leningrad front.
The PPSh-41 had such large investment and so many units already produced that the Soviets realized it would be a waste to completely abandon it for the PPS. At the end of WWII two million Russian PPS-43s were made and caused such an oversupply that the Soviets discontinued it in 1946.
Poland would also go to adopt the PPS-43 and had a few of their factories produce it we know today these would be produced by Baildon Steel Works (12) and H.Cegielski Poznan (6). Poland would produce their PPS-43 units between 1946-1955. Like Russia, Poland would develop a PPS with the over folder designavtedthe PPS Wz.43 but would also go on to make a fixed stock wood buttock version called the PPS wz. 43/52 this model would utilize the space in the stock to store a cleaning kit. Poland was also known to create a trainer which utilized a .22lr rimfire convesion kit.
In 2010 The Pioneer Arms Corp. of Radom Poland began producing closed bolt semi automatic versions designated PPS-43C. The Stocks would be welded closed so they could be legally pistols in the U.S. commercial market. Pioneer would go on to also make versions in 9x19mm. These semi automatic PPS-43s would first be imported by IO Inc. but would later go on to be imported by Pioneer Arms USA before they closed in 2024.Â
