SIG P210-4 West German Border Guard 9mm Luger pistol

Description

The SIG P210-4 was a special version of the P210 made by SIG Switzerland in Neuhausen for the German Border police. It is said that only 6,500 units were ever produced making these one of the rarest variants of the P210. Swiss quality at its finest and delivered to German standards. These P210s are distinct in a few ways. The P210-4 has a D prefix in the serial number. Pistols also can only be 1-6500 in serial numbers (unless proven otherwise.) The SIG P210-4s like other firearms made or exported to Germany would be required to be proofed in Germany. You can expect some of the famous German proof markings on pressure bearing parts of these pistols. The SIG P210-4s do not have Swiss cross crests where they normally are. This is of course because they were made with intent to be exported to Germany. The SIG P210-4’s would include a black leather holster that look a bit different than the standard brown leather holster that the Swiss used. The holsters would have a black lacquer paint to achieve the color.

History

The P210-4 is one of the rarest variants of the P210 pistol. Contracted by the German Border Police only 6,500 units were ever produced. SIG would manufacturer these pistols in Switzerland for the German government. The Federal Republic of Germany needed to arm themselves after the Second World War. Germany did not quite have the money at the time considering the war but they went with SIG for their BGS (Border guard unit) At the time these P210 pistols were contracted for 185 CHF. The P210 was the most expensive service pistol to produce and it was pretty surprising the German’s chose it. Each pistol included two magazines to fulfill the contract. The Swiss had to modify the design a bit to meet the German requirements. A loading indicator at the top of the slide was added along with a safety strap clip. In 1951 5,000 units were ordered and delivered. In 1955 21 additional units were fabricated for the Germans. One last run in the early 1980s was produced but would include a BMI stamp on the trigger guard, some of these pistols were sold on the open market. The SIG P210-4 was replaced by the P6 which was also made by SIG (Model SIG P225). The P6 was more economical and had some nice modern changes.
