History
SIG M.75 (P220):Â The Sig Sauer P220 is a semiautomatic pistol series, originally designed in Switzerland, to replace the SIG P210 (M.49) The P210 is regarded as one of the most accurate 9mm handguns of all time, it was also loved for how smooth and balanced its action was. Its biggest downside was its cost to manufacture; each SIG 210s was hand-lapped which required extensive amounts of time and financial resources. The solution was the 220, and while it cost less to produce than the 210 in many ways it was a major improvement to what SIG did so well with the P210. The slide was not hand-lapped but instead folded and finished by a CNC machine. Not every 220 has a “folded” slide. This is because over time SIG eventually only CNC machined them skipping the folding and welding step. The manual safety that many knew on the 210 had been removed as a revision. Additionally, the magazine safety was also not included. The pistol is double-action, not a single-action, and features a de-cocker lever. The pistol was developed for the Swiss army in 1975 giving it the M.75 designation. The first issue of this pistol featured a “heel” magazine release that would later change to a standard button on the frame. Additionally, the original 220’s also did not have a rail for lights and other attachments. The original 220’s used a white dotted rear sight post and a “U” shaped rear sight with a white line in the notch to allow the user to quickly line the front sight post to the rear. Around this time period is when “S.I.G.” – Schweizerische Industrie Gesellschaft (Swiss Industrial Company) joined with J.P. Sauer (German) to allow the production of handgun in Germany. This was needed to be done because the Swiss government had placed strict export laws in regard to all firearms. S.I.G. was having major success in this era and wanted to expand globally providing their firearms to other nations whether it was commercially or through military/police contracts. This pistol was revolutionary and led to the creation of the SIG 225 (P6), 226, and 229. It is a pistol that has been recently copied in many aspects by other manufacturers. There are many versions of the SIG 220. They have been imported by many companies as well. In some cases, they were items produced in West Germany or Switzerland that were imported over normally as is. The other famous case is that before SIG officially came to the U.S. they imported their 220 pistols through Browning, under the title of “BDA – Browning Double Action” and offered these pistols in 38 super, 9mm, and 45ACP. Later Sig Sauer came to the U.S. and started producing these pistols domestically in 45ACP. Now the 220 is known to be the “big bore pistol” of the 22X series and it is produced in 45ACP, and 10mm! SIG Sauer has even referenced this pistol as “the one that started it all” for them. In many aspects this is true. While the new P320/365 series is a polymer frame striker-fired pistol. It takes much of the 220 series innovation and advantages. The 220 series was seen throughout the world giving SIG Sauer tons of exposure to the public and to militaries, making it one of the most well-regarded handguns of all time.
Condition
Pistol comes in original wooden presentation kit. This P220 is in fantastic condition. Minimal wear we noted a little wear on the barrel where the slide locks into the rear position and a tiny bit of wear on the hammer. The box also had some very light and faint wear like surface scratches but this is very minimal. This set is missing its key. Remakes/Backups can be found online elsewhere if needed. The case still opens and closes.
