History

During WWII there was a need for carbine rifles. The Soviets produced the Model 1938 carbine which was a 1891/30 shortened down taking about 8 inches of overall length of the rifle. This model would not fit a bayonet. In 1944 a proper factory produced carbine was made. The M44 carbine had 50,000 test units and was produced by Izhesvsk and Tula. A permanent side folding spike bayonet was also added to fix the issue of the M.38 carbine. Soviet infantry soldiers would be issued the M44 carbine. After WWII many of the Soviet allies and satellite states in the Warsaw Pact would begin produced M44 carbines of their own. The post war design was slightly changed; Poland,  East Germany, Romania, and Hungary would all produce their own M44 licensed through the Soviet’s. Izhesvsk would be the number one producer of M44 rifles in Russia, Tula also made carbines but not as many.

The Hungarian M44s were produced in 1949 until 1955 for a limited time run. Many of these rifles were sent as aid to places like Vietnam or China. The Hungarians did not really field the M44 but there is some speculation if these carbines were use in the 1956 Revolution. The Hungarian M44 is one of the rarer and more sought after variants by collectors.

Condition

Excellent condition – Pretty close to mint condition

There is some very light wear. On the surface of the wood but there is no major damage, we do not see any cracks or deep scuffs. The stock appears to be the original finish and we would say well over 95% of the finish is intact. The bluing condition is also quite fantastic most of the surface wear is on the end of the muzzle/front sight and on the butt plate. We would also say about 99% of the original finish is intact. The bore and barrel are in fantastic shape. We would rate the bore a 4.5/5. Nice shiny clean bore with good sharp rifling and only minimal fouling. Clean chamber. The bolt and bolt face look great and the action feels very smooth. The bolt still has some original cosmoline on it.
