History
The Remington Rolling Block is a family of breech-loading rifles that was introduced in the mid-1800’s by E. Remington & Sons who later went on to become Remington Arms. Remington made these rifles in a variety of calibers and produced them for the U.S. as well as militaries all over the world. Some of the following calibers are included. .43 Spanish, 12.17×44 Norweigan & Swede and even 8x50mmR Lebel and 7mm Mauser. Other calibers were made too and Remington exported many different examples early on.
The .43 Spanish is a centerfire rifle cartridge invented by Remington. It was introduced in 1867 and was used on numerous rolling block rifle models. Remington originally manufactured these for the governments of Spain. The rifle is also known as .433 Spanish or 11mm Spanish. Some US Peabody rifles used an identical cartridge marked UMC 43-77. Spain purchased the .43 Spanish after they had acquired the newly innovative rolling block action single-shot rifle. At the time these rifles were state-of-the-art, easy to field, and quick. Sam Remington himself made a presentation to the Spaniard who initially ordered 10,000 units in 1869. The Spanish government wanted their own cartridge and some Remington was tasked with the creation of the .43 Spanish. This round had two variants a bottleneck case (11.15x57mmR Remington-Spanish) and a straight wall case (11.4x57mmR Reformado). The round performed similarly to .44-77 Sharps. in 1889 the Spanish upgraded their cartridge to the “reformado” model which used heavier brass and a jacketed bullet. Remington stopped producing the round in 1918 but it became widespread in Europe and the USA after WWII due to it being surplussed out. This is where it made a name for itself in the civilian market among plinkers and hunters.
Argentina had gained its independence from Spain in 1818. Around the late 1800’s Argentina was becoming a developing state and needed to arm its forces. They were one of the largest economies in the region but had not begun producing their small arms so they contracted rifles by Remington to be produced for their forces. Argentina later phased out the Remington rifles for Mausers that they eventually began domestic production on in the early 1900’s. Some of the Argentine rifles were sold as surplus to Egypt and Mexico interestingly.
Condition
The condition of this antique Remington 1879 carbine is very good-excellent.
This is a short carbine model with about a 21″ barrel. The barrel itself is in pretty good shape for a antique rifle this age. We noted good lands and grooves throughout the bore there is some light rust/pitting but that should clean easy with oils and solvents. The bluing condition is in quite good shape on this rifle. There is some light wear and cases of surface rust/patina but it is mild at best. (See photos) The stock and forend are in great shape. We noted the finish is mostly intact and there is minimal wear. The breach face looks good and the hammer and spring tension feel nice and strong.
