The PSL (Pușcă Semiautomată cu Lunetă) is a Romanian designated marksman rifle developed in 1974, mechanically based on the RPK light machine gun rather than the SVD Dragunov, despite their similar appearance and role. Romania began the project after relations with the Soviet Union worsened, leading it to expand its domestic arms industry using Soviet-inspired designs. Produced at the Cugir factory, the PSL has been used by the Romanian Army and other security forces, and production continues under SC Fabrica de Arme Cugir SA. Designed for squad-level snipers to engage targets beyond the range of standard AKM rifles, it operates with a long-stroke Kalashnikov-style piston system and shares only ammunition, optics, and bayonets with the SVD. The PSL-54 has been used in military service by Romania and several other countries, including Armenia, Azerbaijan, Ethiopia, East Germany, Iraq, Libya, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh.
