This Snider-Enfield Mk II** began life in 1861 as an Enfield Pattern 53 (P53) percussion musket. It was later converted to the .577 Snider breech block loading system. Being a Mk II** it was a later conversion with the improved block. This is the long rifle variant with a 36 ½ inch barrel, three barrel bands, and an overall length of 54 ¼ inches.
This rifle is in very good condition. The wood shows no splitting or cracking. There are a number of small dings and scratches common for surplus of this era. The finish shows only minor wear and it may have been refinished/re-lacquered at some point.
The barrel, barrel bands, rear sight, and block have almost complete finish loss. The barrel shows only the most minor signs of staining and no apparent rust. The block shows minor wear and some grime build up. The chamber has minor staining and wear. The bore is very good showing only minor pitting, no active rust, minor wear, and decent rifling. The brass trigger guard shows wear and tarnish.
All parts appear present and mechanically this functions as it should. It has not been test fired by us.
This rifle includes the cleaning rod which has some rust staining and a bend at the front.
